How to Determine the Apprentice's Wage

This guide explains how to calculate an apprentice's wage using the apprentice wage schedule from an Appendix A.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Find the Journeyman Rate
Visit Sam.gov to locate the appropriate journeyman wage rate. Filter by:

    • Building type (e.g., commercial, residential)

    • County where the work is performed

    • Occupation of the apprentice
This rate serves as the baseline for calculating the apprentice's wage.

  2. Locate the Correct Appendix A
Ensure you select the Appendix A corresponding to the apprentice’s occupation. Refer to Section 4: Apprentice Wage Schedule in the document.

  3. Calculate the Apprentice Wage
The Apprentice Wage Schedule provides a percentage of the journeyman rate based on the apprentice’s hours of experience. For example, if the schedule allows paying as low as 72% of the journeyman’s rate for the first 1,000 hours:

    • Multiply the journeyman rate by 0.72 to determine the apprentice’s starting wage.

    • Example: If the journeyman rate is $50/hour, the apprentice wage would be $50 × 0.72 = $36/hour.

  4. Set Up Wage Tracking in Apprentix
To streamline compliance, input the wage schedule into Apprentix. The platform can notify you when an apprentice becomes eligible for a wage increase based on their hours worked.

  5. Understand Wage Increase Requirements

    • Wage increases are only required if you’re paying the minimum rate outlined in the Apprentice Wage Schedule.

    • If you’re paying above the minimum, no increase is necessary unless the new minimum exceeds your current rate.

    • The wage schedule represents the minimum allowable wage; you may choose to pay more.

Additional Notes

  • Always verify you’re using the correct Appendix A to avoid errors in wage calculations.

  • Regularly check Sam.gov for updates to journeyman rates, as they may change based on location or occupation.

  • Using Apprentix to track wages ensures timely notifications and helps maintain compliance with apprenticeship regulations.

  • The discount applies only to the hourly rate, not to fringe benefits.
