There are three types of training approaches:
Time-based: the apprentice’s progress is measured by the number of hours spent on the job and in the classroom.
Competency-based: the apprentice’s progress is measured by his or her ability to demonstrate the application of relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Hybrid: the apprentice’s progress is measured through a combination of hours spent in the program and competencies demonstrated in the workplace.
When you’re considering which training approach to use, make sure that the approach lines up with how you’d want to design your wage increases as well.
For example, if you select a time-based approach but want to reward an apprentice with a wage increase based on them being able to demonstrate that they’re achieved competency in a skill, then you should select competency-based or hybrid.
Most modern apprenticeships are steering away from strictly time-based apprenticeships and are opting for competency-based or hybrid approaches.
